发布时间:2007-10-28
Background

According to the Institute for Shipboard Education, during the semester about 30 courses will be offered through the University of Pittsburgh’s College of Arts and Sciences with the objective of providing students field experiences relative to their academic pursuits. In particular, the goal is to explore the common grounds that all these diverse countries share and the cultural, political and economic impact they have on each other. These field experiences provide an invaluable opportunity for students to explore, enrich and engage with people who can provide new insights and cultural lenses to view the world.

Guiding Principles For Shantou University Selection

Recognizing that Shantou University students have not been exposed to all English language instruction, it is imperative that the student selected for this scholarship must possess excellent oral command of the language and the necessary communication skills such as English reading, writing and comprehension. In addition, they must demonstrate the ability to do independent research as well as an understanding of the skills necessary to be a member of project team.

To fully utilize the objective of the Semester At Sea which is -- to explore the common grounds that all these diverse countries share and the cultural, political and economic impact they have on each other -- emphasis should be placed on the student’s existing knowledge and understanding of recent world news events, as well as the ability to analyze, conduct research to substantiate his/her points of view. A strong grasp of the cultural, political and economy of China in light of its role as an emerging world super power is essential as the student will need to respond to questions on the above topics related to China factually and intelligently.

Selection Process
Through the Student Affairs Office, the annual call for nominations will be distributed to all colleges.
The colleges collect and then form their own committee to screen through the initial applicants and nominate one student from each college based on the criteria below.
